Modernism?
A global social and cultural movement known as modernism tried to reorient society and culture towards the realities and ideals of modern industrial life beginning in the early decades of the 20th century (Tate, org 2022). They are all different from one another yet they are unified by the ambition to "humanise the machine" and the new modes of representation. It can be found through arts, music, movies, architecture, forms of dances (e.g ballet), poetry, literature, sculpture, designs, and so on.
The major fears stemming from Modernity?
The disappearance of norms that have existed since ancient times and the elimination of customs that have been handed down from ancestors and become one of the attractions and unique values in society. There is a shift in values in local culture. Resulting in social inequality. The social gap caused by this modernisation can be seen through the phenomenon of the occurrence of social groups such as hawkers, unemployed, street vendors and others.
What did some people think were the problems with modernism?
The problem with modernism is that it creates social problems such as socio-economic inequality, environmental pollution, crime, consumerism, and juvenile delinquency. There is an economic gap that can be seen through the difference between the lives of the rich and the poor, thus triggering the emergence of a consumptive culture and a culture of demonstration effect or like to show off. This is because the existence of modernism will erode the values that are owned by the community.
How do people survive in a world that pays no attention?
People live in a world that doesn't pay attention by focusing on their own lives, living life as usual and solving problems in their own way without involving other people.
Now that art and media are pervasive and endlessly replicable, what do we think about them?
Art and media that permeate easily actually provide good benefits because it makes it easier for us to learn about both as easily as being able to create art by learning through social media, but this has a bad impact on the creator because it is easy to imitate so that if the art they make is not get a legal licence, then other people will easily imitate and use it for commercial purposes
How are emerging technologies influencing how we perceive the world?
With technology, human needs can be met quickly and easily, such as buying or ordering goods and services through online shopping and others. Science and technology is one of the conditions that determine the progress or not of a country. With technology, it is easy for us to obtain information about the world so that we are not easily consumed by hoaxes and understand what is actually happening in the world, thus changing the view that the world is a cruel thing because it is controlled by people who have interests.
What forms of art or media are considered legitimate in the digital age?
Art that meets the media of electronic devices such as computers, cameras, video recorders makes art change a lot. Art is no longer pure as a form of expression of the soul that made it but holds a million meanings and 'interests'. With the help of computerised tools, art becomes an instant thing that can be done by anyone. In contrast to the era of Van Gogh or Da Vinchi, at that time art was seen as sacred and could only be done by people with the status of artists. This is certainly contrary to the initial principle of art in classical culture which is based on nemesis or imitating the original object instead of representing the object.
The Creation of Adam
To be clear, I have never seen it in real life, all I see is scattered on the internet. This is the most authentic piece of art I've ever seen in my life. Just looking at it digitally is very beautiful, this is because the media makes it easier for me to see the work through the internet even though I have not been able to see it directly but the touch of art emitted in the painting is so beautiful that it makes me stunned even though I see it digitally, this means painting the original that is seen by the naked eye is more beautiful and implies the true meaning because what is described on the internet alone is beautiful.
Did it have an ‘aura’ as Benjamin claims? How so/why not?
Yes, it has an aura as Benjamin claims because with photography it can help the art to be seen by many people without having to see the original, this changes the nature of art and images which has big implications for the idea of realism and authenticity. The picture changes the original context because the reproduction of the artwork is lacking in one element, namely the presence of space and time, it is unique in the place where it occurs so viewing it via the internet removes the atmosphere of space and time depicted in the image. “One might include the omitted element in the term 'aura' and go on to say: what withers away in the age of reproduction mechanics is the aura of a work of art.” So that the reproduction still depicts the aura in the painting, according to Benjamin.
Can contemporary digital media creators have an aura?
It may be that way because it is reproducible, mass-produced images create new authenticity, and give new ways of seeing the world. The context that technology creates can provide access to 'better' than ever thought possible. In short, reproduction mechanics: Shifting art from the original Context. Therefore diluting his aura and giving him a new way of seeing the world. One way is 'acceptance in a state of disturbance'. So that contemporary digital media creators can still have an aura, it's just that the aura obtained is thinner than the aura possessed by the original context, but this actually gives a new view of the world.
Why do we want a sense of ‘authenticity’ in the media?
People want to know whether something created in the media is really real or not so we want authenticity in the media, this is because the media is used to see the world so of course we only need the truth of what we are seeing not a lie that is what This is the reason why we want a sense of authenticity in the media rather than just based on the perspective of other people which has no validity. Like receiving an item of course we want to see how the item is genuine as we want or as described by the seller as well as our sense of desire to see authenticity in the media.
What are the barriers towards achieving ‘authenticity’ in the media?
"The presence of the original is a prerequisite for the concept of authenticity." With reproducibility, the concept of the original changes – and the authenticity of the art becomes very important. Something is/is believed to be lost in the reproduction process. To achieve authenticity in media requires special techniques at the time of reproduction because authenticity can be lost. at the time of the reproduction process so that this becomes an obstacle for the media to achieve authenticity. The technique of reproduction releases the object being reproduced from the domain of tradition. By making multiple reproductions it replaces the plurality of copies for the unique.
Do some people NOT want ‘authenticity’ in the media?
Some people want to see authenticity in the media, this is because they have full trust in the media so they only need the views of others to get the information they want without having to re-check the validity of the information they receive, usually people like this are easier to tremble with hoax news because they only quote from one source without wanting to know the authenticity of the media so that they have little curiosity and believe fully in what they are reading or what information they receive at that time.
